![]() There's Axton, the Commando, who can deploy a machinegun turret with a barrel that can swivel in a 360 degree arch. There's Maya, the Siren, who is able to project a forcefield around enemies and haul them out of cover. There's Salvador, the Gunzerker, a raging slab of muscle and testosterone whose special powers is dual-wielding weapons. Like the first Borderlands, players have a choice of four character classes to pick from. In swift succession, the player finds themselves joining up with a rebel movement – led by the four characters from the original game – who want to stop Jack from unleashing some sort of unstoppable weapon upon the planet's inhabitants. Hyperion's man on the ground is a sneering bucket of contempt and hair grease known only as Handsome Jack, who has taken it upon himself to wipe any non-Hyperion personnel – including the player – off the face of Pandora. As the game begins, Pandora is in the grip of a war between an entity known at the Hyperion Corporation and a rag-tag band of prospectors. There's a plot of sorts, but it's mainly used as a framework to hang a ton of gun battles and looting opportunities off. For example, the fact that Pandora's resident big-game hunter sports a monocle and a plummy British accent shouldn't surprise anyone, but if you could predict this character would send you on a mission that involves sifting through mounds of alien dung for voice recorders, you're a more visionary gamer than I. Gearbox paints in broad brushstrokes, sure, but they don't rely on cardboard cut-out characters or run-of-the-mill mission structure. The planet of Pandora is equal parts Firefly and Mad Max, with all of the dialogue and plotting taken care of by the creators of South Park. The world of Borderlands 2 is a place where irreverent space-western sci-fi collides with trailer-park horrorshow hostility and all of it is shot through with rambunctious playground humour. There's a kernel of truth to that, sure, but the game's most immediate impact is made by Gearbox fleshing out the overall character of the universe they created in the first Borderlands. A rudimentary appraisal of the game is that Gearbox is simply super-sizing their 2009 sleeper-hit, giving players more – well, a super-tanker-load more – of guns to shoot, enemies to kill and trinkets to pick up. ![]() The fact that I've spent four paragraphs talking about my favourite weapons in Borderlands 2 should give you some sense of the loving care that inhabits every pixel of this title. Nope, I'm a Jakob man, through and through. And don't get me started on Tediore their guns may be effective, but their garish day-glo colours mark them out as the sort of guns you'd take to a rave. ![]() I prefer them to, say, the rockabilly blasters made by Bandit, or the hi-tech, yet soulless-looking stock of Hyperion. Not only do their guns bring the pain, as it were, but they all have a classic, wild-west-meets-steampunk look to them. Yes, it could be said that Jakob is my favourite weapons manufacturer on Pandora. Unless, of course, you score a critical hit and then you're looking at 1,345 points of damage in most instances, the target's head simply goes away. This is a sleek, beautiful instrument of death capable of putting 245 points of damage into targets at a fair distance. Over longer range, though, it's fairly useless, which is why I have the Jakob Skookum Muckamuck sniper rife. ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() James Herondale, 17-year-old son of Will and Tessa, finds himself and his “perfectly lethal dimple” hung up between two stunning new arrivals: Cordelia Carstairs, red-haired Persian/British wielder of a fabled magic sword, and Grace Blackthorn, an emotionally damaged but (literally, as the author unsubtly telegraphs) spellbinding friend from childhood. Teenage offspring of the Herondales, Carstairs, Fairchilds, and other angel-descended Nephilim continue their families’ demon-fighting ways amid a round of elegant London balls, soirees, salons, picnics, and romantic intrigues. Their sincere hopes and foolish naïveté make the teens’ desperate, grand gesture all that much more tragic.Ĭlare’s ( Ghosts of the Shadow Market, 2019, etc.) latest is set in the Shadowhunter world in the 20th century’s first decade (with frequent flashbacks to the previous one). Though increasingly disenchanted with the Sinclair legacy of self-absorption, the four believe family redemption is possible-if they have the courage to act. Instead, she humanizes them (and their painful contradictions) by including nostalgic images that showcase the love shared among Cady, her two cousins closest in age, and Gat, the Heathcliff-esque figure she has always loved. Brilliantly, Lockhart resists simply crucifying the Sinclairs, which might make the family’s foreshadowed tragedy predictable or even satisfying. Cady’s fairy-tale retellings are dark, as is the personal tragedy that has led to her examination of the skeletons in the Sinclair castle’s closets its rent turns out to be extracted in personal sacrifices. But this is no sanitized, modern Disney fairy tale this is Cinderella with her stepsisters’ slashed heels in bloody glass slippers. Reunited each summer by the family patriarch on his private island, his three adult daughters and various grandchildren lead charmed, fairy-tale lives (an idea reinforced by the periodic inclusions of Cady’s reworkings of fairy tales to tell the Sinclair family story). He now lives with his family in Asheville, North Carolina, where he enjoys playing games, eating pizza, and, perhaps not too surprisingly, reading books.A devastating tale of greed and secrets springs from the summer that tore Cady’s life apart.Ĭady Sinclair’s family uses its inherited wealth to ensure that each successive generation is blond, beautiful and powerful. My comment wasn't just about the snort wheeze, it was a generalization about how people get on here and push the numbers of yrs they have hunted pretending to be an expert because they have killed a couple big deer. Like any type of calling, the cover, distance the animal you're calling, and wind directions are all critical. For the record, all the snort weezes I've ever heard were so quiet you could barely hear them at 30 or 40 yards. If you want to snort weeze, you can duplicate the sound with you're mouth just as easy as any "call". We burned something like 4-1/2 hours of footage in one hunt, and to this day - filming that encounter and the number of vocalizations that are that rare - was something of a dream come true. We also filmed a 4-1/2 snort weeze at a buck coming in to check out a hot doe that the big boy was defending. We filmed a 2-1/2 year old snort weeze at a doe this year (that he was chasing). He got to his feet, stepped over the room's other occupant, and made his way to the window. The Jack of Diamonds began talking to me. It could have been that my subconscious - which was kind of footloose at the time - just seized on the available props out of habit. Ordinarily, of course, we get the message empty-handed, unless we are doing the calling. I decided later that it must be our mental quirk associated with the Trumps that made me see it that way when someone was trying to reach me and I had cards in my hand - any cards. Also, I was physically strung out from a long day's gliding and not much sleep the night before. I had just finished a couple very hot sets and was still kind of high.
